Julien Cristofoli
A Diplomate of the Ecole Nationale Superiere des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, in Fashion Design, Julien was chosen by Azzedine Alaia, the legendary designer, to serve as his Assistant in his Paris studio. Julien is drawn to form, its precision and strictness serving perfectly the collections of Alaia, a designer who became renowned at the end of the 1980's for his form-fitting, body-conscious designs.
With Alaia, Julien learned the technique of designing clothes by working directly on the mannequin: the moulage. Julien later worked in the role of designer/patternmaker for Balmain Haute Couture, Angelo Tarlazzi, Jerome L'Huillier, Shinishiro Arakawa, and Maud Perl.
In 1987, Julien created his own label, and offered his haute couture approach to a private clientele, expanding his mastery of the technique of moulage as he worked with various body types and fabrications.
In 1997, he became the modeliste for the Japanese designer Yoichi Nagasawa, who showed his collection in Paris. Julien translated the designer's vision using the technique of the moulage. It was a first for a designer from Japan, where flat patternmaking was the norm. This collaboration in Tokyo lasted 5 years, and together they assembled the first European collections of the Japanese design collective, MUJI ROSHI.
Julien's willingness and enthusiasm, as well as his professional rigor and his fine teaching sense, led him to become a consultant at the international fashion school, ESMOD, where he conducts seminars for professionals, teaching the technique of the moulage. Also, he expanded his sessions in Seoul and South Korea to include haute couture, suits, wedding gowns....
These are the techniques, worked out in depth and perfected during the course of his wide-ranging career, that Julien Cristofoli presents. Inspired by the words of Victor Hugo, Julien knows that form is the foundation which comes back to the surface; and when the two work in concert, all words about beauty are superfluous. It is this beauty which he will teach you to manifest on the body, in the course of this seminar.
